Chise è la classica ragazzina impacciata che per dimostrare alle amiche e a sé stessa di poter mettere da parte la sua timidezza dichiara il suo amore al compagno di scuola Shuji.
Non si aspetta minimamente che il ragazzo ricambi e quando invece lui accetta viene colta alla sprovvista e al loro primo appuntamento sono vicini alla rottura. Ma aprendosi e dialogando scoprono che quel sentimento che provano è amore davvero e decidono di continuare la relazione.
Un giorno, mentre Shuji è in giro per Sapporo a fare compere con gli amici la città viene pesantemente bombardata. Shuji viene investito da un'esplosione nata dallo schianto a terra di qualcosa simile ad un aereo vicino a lui. Dopo aver riaperto gli occhi vede sul luogo dell'incidente proprio Chise, spaventosamente mutata, per metà macchina da guerra, con delle grandi ali metalliche che le fuoriescono dalla schiena. Scopre così che la sua tenera ragazza non è altro che l'arma finale impiegata dalle truppe giapponesi nella guerra contro gli invasori.
Un anime di certo tenero e che è riuscito a commuovermi grazie alla dolcezza dei protagonisti e alla purezza dei sentimenti che durante tutta la vicenda vengono fatti riscoprire... un disegno delicato, adatto ad abbracciare i temi che Saikano narra...

The story begins with Shuj, a high school student in a Hokkaido coastal city, walking up to an observatory and reminiscing about his girlfriend, Chise ; there he finds her exchange diaries that she purposefully left behind. The ensuing story is narrated by Shuji through flashbacks while reading Chise's diary.
Chise, a fellow student in his class, declares her love for Shuji at the beginning of the series. However, Chise is very shy and Shuji is insensitive: neither know how to express their feelings very well, but they do indeed have feelings for each other. One day, while Shuji is shopping in Sapporo, unknown bombers attack the city in broad daylight. He and his friends run for cover, but notice a fast and small flying object shooting down the enemy bombers. Separated from his friends, Shuji wanders through the wreckage - only to stumble upon Chise; here she has metal wings and weapons - apparently grafted onto her body. She tells him she has become the ultimate weapon, without her knowledge or consent, and that she is seen by the Japan Self Defense Forces (JSDF) as the last hope for defending Japan from imminent invasion.
This Anime's sure really sweet and managed to touch me because of the sweetness of characters and because of the pureness of feelings that we can rediscover... a soft draw, right for the themes that the story tells...
